Salone del Mobile is held within the framework of Milan Design Week, which attracts more than 2,000 brands from around the world to Rho Fiera, the convention center on the outskirts of Milan where it takes place. The 61st edition focuses on the planet and reveals the commitment shown by the organizers, with sustainability certifications such as ISO 20121 and compliance with the United Nations Global Compact, as well as by exhibitors.

This year, Salone del Mobile highlights those brands that showcase sustainability at the forefront of their designs. In this way, the fair and its organizers have taken measures to reduce the environmental impact it produces. For example, waste management and recycling practices were implemented, and the use of sustainable and low environmental impact materials was encouraged in the designs presented by exhibitors.

Many of these exhibitors showed a greater environmental awareness in their designs and materials, and presented innovative solutions for creating sustainable products. The fair is a platform for showcasing technologies and processes that reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining high standards of quality and design.

Pertanto was present at Salone del Mobile 2023, held from April 18th to 23rd, 2023. We bring you a curated selection by our team of brands that promote sustainability and design:

Due to this commitment, the fair featured exhibitions and stands aligned with the values of Salone and the promotion of sustainable practices throughout the industry. Italian brand LAGO presented its exhibition stand, called Good House for the second consecutive year, which reduces carbon emissions by 87% compared to other stands at the fair. Good House has been designed with the circular economy in mind, fully recyclable and reusable. Pedrali, a company that produces contemporary furniture, presented #PedraliBacktoNature, an installation made with raw materials that can be easily disassembled and reused in the future.

At the fair, other brands showcased their sustainable consciousness through the production of products with innovative materials. The production of Caimi Brevetti, founded in 1949, consists of objects made of a single material, easily recyclable and designed to be disassembled. This allows for separate recycling of individual components. Porro uses only selected raw materials, minimizing waste and consumption. An origami configuration showcases the nature of the VentiTre dressing room from Lema, made from 100% recycled wood and easy to disassemble, and the Soffio seating system with recycled fiber padding.

This initiative has led to the return of natural materials such as cotton, wool, jute, wood, and paper, which are locally sourced and processed using traditional techniques. The Prato-based company, The House of Lyria, presents sofas and armchairs designed by Federico Pazienza, which use natural fibers dyed with colors derived from organic sources such as coffee, tea, or ash. Woodnotes selects materials from the natural Finnish environment and processes them by combining traditional techniques and advanced technologies, obtaining paper yarns interpreted in a contemporary way.

This year at Salone del Mobile, the Euroluce 2023 lighting biennial was also held, where we could also see the trend towards innovation and sustainability for our planet. One standout exhibitor was Artemide, presenting ultra-light and compact products that reduce materials, weight, and packaging, while maximizing luminous flow to illuminate more and consume less. For its part, Flos presents the Black Flag extendable wall lamp by Konstantin Grcic in PRO version with Eco Mode, a sensor that adjusts the brightness of the light according to the environment and reduces consumption while extending the life of the bulb.

Salone del Mobile at Milan, one of the most important design events in the world, is increasingly committed to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Exhibiting companies strive to use recyclable materials, reduce environmental impact, and improve energy efficiency of their products while maintaining a focus on quality and design. This shift towards a more sustainable mindset is a trend that is spreading worldwide and is an important step in the fight against climate change and the protection of the environment.
